Customer Review: A new field of study on Van Gogh’s art
A beautiful catalogue for an exhibition held at the Neue Galerie in NY in 2007, this book shows how German and Austrian artists, from Kokoschka, Kirchner, Schmidt-Rottluff to Egon Schiele, Gerstl and even, to some extent, Klimt, were all inspired by the Dutch master. The book studies the reception of Van Gogh in both countries in the first two decades of the XXth century (German museums started buying his works before American museums), through the active trade of dealers and patrons. It also dwells on the nazi period in Germany, when both Van Gogh and the expressionists were included in the so-called “degenerate art”, deemed so by the fascist leaders who ended up selling their works at auction (pictures of the auctions appear in the book). The illustrations are perfect (sometimes placing next to each other works by Van Gogh and their interpretation, so to speak, by each expressionist artist) and the selection of works, some of them actual masterpieces, makes this book a top-quality companion to the exhibition. An interesting post-war development, which is well described in the book, is the influence Van Gogh had on Francis Bacon, through the latter’s series inspired by a painting destroyed during WWII.

Baby Van Gogh is from the award-winning infant-developmental media company Baby Einstein, whose goal and philosophy is the satisfaction of a child’s curiosity through sight and sound. In the main Theatre section of this disc you’ll find lots of simple shapes, primary colours and favourite toys passing across the screen. Unlike the simpler earlier releases, this is focused on the works of Vincent Van Gogh, who is here represented by a blue sock puppet! To begin with the video seems like something of a nature documentary with flowers in bloom and animals on the move, before we’re taken through the colours of the rainbow with sections devoted to the individual colours. For example in Yellow, there are toy chicks, sunflowers, lemons and children playing in yellow paper shavings. All the while, The Baby Einstein Music Box Orchestra play us music from Van Gogh’s era such as The Blue Danube Waltz, The William Tell Overture, Swan Lake and Flight of the Bumble Bee. This is a slight advancement in expectation of your child from the more basic initial releases but has a Video Tutorial to help the parent understand how it all works.

On the DVD: Baby Van Gogh is the name of the feature itself, but from the Main Menu you can enter a Concert Hall to replay the musical cues from the main show. There’s also an Art Exhibit of each of the featured Van Gogh paintings, a Resources section with the aforementioned Video Tutorial and a Toy Chest crediting all the toys used, just in case a certain someone wants one of their own. –Paul Tonks

Excellent in all ways. My little darling is captivated by this DVD. The opening music excites her & she squeels in delight as the puppets appear. It’s educational as it teaches her colours & entertains her while I get on and do other things.

My daughter has had this DVD since she was five months old, she is now ten months. I am a teacher and have to say this is a fantastic 20 minutes of fun. My daughter watches it most days while I make her supper and she is totally enthralled, she now predicts what is coming next and responds to all of the puppets and children. Worth every penny and not just a cartoon with no real educational benefits.

Customer Review: Love Them or Hate Them!
It appears that our first child (daughter) really does not enjoy these DVDS (yet). She is now about 9 months old. I must admit that I do find some of the visuals/music a bit irritating myself. Couple of points: 1) These DVDs might seem like a real bargain, but remember that each one is around 30mins long 2) I wish they had combined more of the 30mins DVDs together on one disc - especially if they combined them on the basis of suitable age - to save the hassle of having so many discs and needing to change them in the player 3) Like mentioned by another reviewer, it is a bit “American”. Overall, I do not regret buying them but I guess you cannot predict whether your little one will love them or hate them!

This set is great value for many, as buying every DVD separately is just so expensive. And my son just loves watching it. Very usefull when you need a coffe brake or have some house work to do and don’t want to be disturbed. Even my friends kids that are much older love to watch them.

Customer Review: The “Smart About…” series of books are wonderful
My 5, 6 and 8 yr old kids are entranced when I read them the Smart About Art books. After reading one, I came back to Amazon and ordered as many as I could. They are written as a student would write a book report, but are humorous, touching and extremely informative with plenty of examples of the artists’ work. I attended Art School 20+ years ago and it was a refresher course for me as well. It includes background/personal info about the artist, but only as much as a child can comprehend and as it pertains to his art. These books have just the right amount of info on the artists and their work. I wanted to share the world of art with my kids. Though my youngest two still use coloring books and my oldest reads chapter books without illustrations, these Smart About Art picture books are the perfect mix where they all can gain something from them–this series is neither too young nor too advanced. After years of reading picture books, my kids often ask “can that really happen?” or “is that person real?” I wanted a break from the imaginative world of children’s lit and now I’m happy to finally answer “Yes, this person really existed, this really happened!” after reading the Smart About Art books.
