The Massacre of Chior, watercolour, 33.8 x 30 cm, Muse du Louvre
Lion Hunt in Morocco
Ferdinand-Victor-Eugene Delacroix, 1798-1863
1854, Oil on canvas; 74 x 92 cm
This is one of two works in the Hermitage by Delacroix, outstanding master of French Romantic art.
Created 20 years after his trip to the East, the picture does not represent any actual event but reflects
the artist’s impression of those exotic lands. Bright, contrasting colours emphasize the sense of
anticipation and tension in both mind and body of the participants.
